St. Mary Parish at 700 Columbia Dr, Durand, MI 48429 US - History of Parish

History of Parish
St. Mary Church began as a mission of Gaines, MI in 1900. It started as a parish in 1901 with a mission in Morrice; the first pastor was Fr. Dennis Hayes, who later became the first rector of Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit. The original church was in downtown Durand on the corner of Sycamore and Pine St. (across from the old high school). The present church was built in 1956 on the east side of town (700 Columbia Dr.). by Fr. Franklin Hay. The Educational Center was built later; it was built with the intention of starting a parish school, but that never came about because of a lack of teaching sisters. It is now used for parish religious education, other parish meetings, and Head Start.
